I’m not sure when it happened but we are SMACK dab in the middle of holiday season. Which, for me at least, means in addition to all the holiday goodies floating about I will be battling the munchies while traveling to visit friends and family.
The only thing that helps me prevent the fast food drive-thru snack attack is preparation. Here are a few of my savvy travel snack ideas.
Crunchy Cut Veggies
This may be cliche but sometimes I think we forget that cut vegetable sticks make a great snack. They’re crunchy, tasty and healthy! Celery and carrots are tried and true but how about sliced radishes, turnips, jicima sticks or bell peppers? Bring small containers of peanut butter or hummus to add a bit of protein and you’re totally set!
Cheese and Crackers
Let’s get serious – you can’t bring a block of cheese, a knife and a cutting board but making some fun cheese and cracker sandwiches is doable. Smear some of your favorite The Laughing Cow Wedges on whole wheat crackers and top with another cracker or my favorite, a turkey pepperoni slice. Pop them in a Ziploc bag and you are good to go!
Popcorn
Popcorn is one of those go to snacks for me while at home but one day I realized popping a bag to take with me in the car was simply genius. It’s light, tasty and lasts a long time. You can even mix it up by sprinkling with a bit of cinnamon and sweetener, Parmesan cheese, or even make a quick batch of light chocolate kettle corn!
Trail Mix
You can buy your own but where’s the fun in that? Mix together your favorite dried fruits and nuts. I love cashews, dried cranberries and dried apricots or dried cherries and almonds. Sharp or smoky cheese go great on the side too! Try some Mini Babybel Cheddar or Gouda – they are great on the go!
Sandwich Sushi
Sure, you could make some quick sandwiches but that’s boring. Why not take your favorite whole grain tortilla, smear with some Laughing Cow cheese, top with ham slices, grated carrots and roll it up? Then cut it into little rounds like sushi! It’s fun and travels well! Click here to see a more detailed recipe.
