What is better than the smell of a fresh, summer BBQ? Probably nothing, except enjoying it with family and friends!

I make a mean Bison Burger. I enjoy side salads, fresh vegetables and fruits – mostly watermelon – and a cool beverage to wash it all down with. And yes, even dessert (gluten free of course)! But it’s not only the tepid smells and mouth-watering foods that I enjoy about a BBQ with friends and family. It’s also the activities we do. Remember, eating great food and enjoying activity are all part of the healthy lifestyle equation I adore!

Here are 3 ways to keep moving during the summer BBQ:

1.  Volleyball (or other games): If you are at a park (or even if you can accommodate at home), enjoy a game of volleyball with friends and family. Many parks have outdoor volleyball nets set up year round. Choose teams and make a game out of it, or even just “volley” for fun. Not a fan of volleyball? Try other backyard games such as: beanbag toss, horseshoes, basketball, frisbee, softball or badminton. Not only are these ways to keep active at your summer BBQ, but they also offer a little friendly competition!

2.  Water and a “Cool” Activity: Summer BBQ’s are typically, without a doubt, hot on the grill and hot in the air! Fortunately, many people have their summer BBQ around a pool. Use this to your advantage for some “cool” activity. There are many things you can do right in the pool. Need some ideas?  Here are some in, “Make a Splash: Five Fun Water Games.”  Don’t have access to a pool, but still want some “cool” activity? How about a water balloon fight? Or running through the sprinkler with your children? Or something even as simple as a water fight? No matter what, you are running around, keeping active, staying cool and having a ton of fun!

3.  Daytime Butterflies. Nighttime Fireflies: Children love running around at summer BBQs! Any activity they can find they will engage in. How many times have you seen a child trying to “catch” a butterfly during the day or a firefly at night? Don’t just watch them; join them! Even if you aren’t participating in the actual “catch,” you can still run around with them and share in their excitement! Think of it as little sprinting bursts.

Summer BBQ’s are a great way to enjoy time outdoors with friends, family and great food. There is no reason to make them sedentary when there are plenty of ways to combine them with entertainment via activity. And besides, you will feel much less guilty about your BBQ indulge if you negate it with movement!

What are your most favorite ways to stay active during your summer BBQs?
