Summertime fades but keep up fitness image_SK Hoffman 9.11 post

Summer lovin’ is coming to a halt quickly. The lazy days of summer, pools, BBQ’s and late nights outdoors are dwindling down. And while it may seem that your active days of summer are also coming to an end, the truth is that there is much to look forward to from a fitness perspective in the days and months ahead.

Instead of letting fitness fade away with summer, try these 4 tips to keep it moving right along:

  1. Outdoor Running. Good news; you can still run outdoors once summer ends. As a matter of fact, your options increase. You likely did your outdoor summertime running in the early mornings to avoid the heat and humidity. I know I did! But now, if you’re too busy drinking that Pumpkin Spice Latte in the morning no worries! Running at noon or after work outdoors will be perfectly comfortable still. It may even be more pleasurable, helping you run longer!
  2. Late Night Walks. During the summer, daylight extends past 9 pm, making late night walks a joy. As the days become shorter, it seems that this calm, relaxing, yet active way to end the day may end. You have already made your late night walks routine; keep them. Just make sure to dress warm enough and wear reflective clothing and shoes. Be safest by having a buddy join you, but carry on!
  3. Swimming Indoors. One of the best things about swimming your laps in the summer is that you’re multitasking by getting a nice tan to accompany a nice workout. Don’t ditch your swimming routine just because summer is over. Swimming is a great workout that’s easy on the joints (which you may need after all those summer running races). Head to a local indoor pool, and keep up with your laps!
  4. Bikini Be Gone. Admit it: You either accelerate your summer fitness routine or begin it altogether because you are eager to sport tank tops, shorts and bikinis. Oftentimes once summer closes we think, “Well, time to store an extra layer for winter – hello sweatshirts and jeans.” Now I’m a sweatshirts-and-jeans-type-of-girl year round, but only because I love them. Don’t use them to “hide.”

Remember, success with fitness goals in general do not happen overnight. There is no such thing as “quick” weight loss or a “quick” way to excellent fitness. It takes time, patience and hard work. Keep up your summer fitness routine all year round in whatever capacity you can. As the summer fades, make sure your fitness continues. I guarantee it will pay huge dividends come next May when you’re getting ready for another fantastic summer!

What is the #1 thing you will do to keep your summer fitness on a roll?
