It’s almost FALL (as of September 22nd)! You know what that means? Cool sweatshirt wearing nights, changing leaves, college football, and a whole new harvest of fruits and vegetables!
Fall brings a lot of fun and a welcomed change (for me) in the food department. We are coming off the berry, zucchini, tomato and melon season and heading into comfort food zone.
In the vegetable department things like:
- Acorn, Butternut and Delicata Squash;
- Broccoli and Cauliflower;
- Brussels Sprouts;
- Kohlrabi;
- Mushrooms;
- Sweet Potatoes, and
- Pumpkins…
Dominate the farmers’ markets and produce aisles.
Fall also brings with it some fun fruits, including:
- Apples;
- Cranberries;
- Grapes;
- Pears, and
- Pomegranates (a favorite in our house)
Knowing what’s currently being harvested can help you buy more local and fresh items. Visit Fruit and Veggies More Matters.org for a list of everything in season and if you are looking for some fall harvest cooking inspiration, check out some of the recipes on The Laughing Cow website like:
A grilled cheese sandwich using a Mini Babybel and apples.
Sweet Onion & Roasted Broccoli Pita Pizza
A twist on the traditional white pizza using Light Creamy Swiss.
Crazy-Creamy Crab Stuffed Mushrooms
These make both an awesome appetizer and a hot ‘n cheesy snack!
And finally, Broccoli and Cheese soup
Nothing beats a bowl of soup on a chilly fall night.
Happy Fall Everyone!
