3 Fall Fitness Activities to Try

Fall Fitnesss

Fall, like every other season, is filled with goodies galore.  You might happen drink one too many pumpkin spice lattes or eat one too many sides of carrot cake with cream cheese icing.  But unlike summer, where we all know the “perfect” fitness activities to combat those calories, fall can present more of a challenge.  The good news is that there are several ways to have an active fall.

Here are 3 fall fitness activities that I’m confident you’ll be able to enjoy:

  1. Running/Jogging/Walking.  (For the sake of this post, I’ll just refer to the happy-medium of jogging.   You choose whatever you prefer.) Start your day off perfectly with a jog in the great outdoors.  The air is crisp and cool, making it the perfect temperature for a jog.  Many races happen during the fall – for fun or for competition. The Chicago Marathon just passed, but you can start prepping now for another major race next year. Another fall race event that is always fun to participate in is the local Turkey Trot.  Many communities have a 5K, 10K or even a 15K on the morning of Thanksgiving.  You can enjoy a jog before indulging in the holiday eats.  Give this fall activity a try; you might be pleasantly surprised!
  2. Non-Traditional.  Fitness doesn’t always mean the traditional ways we’ve all heard about and it certainly doesn’t have to be dreaded.  Fitness means activity, moving our bodies, keeping fit and staying healthy.  What better way to do this during fall than with an activity such as walking through a corn maize, going to an apple orchard and picking apples or raking leaves?  These are all great activities for the whole family, too! Mix fitness with #SnackJoy by going to an apple orchard, picking your own apples and then enjoying those apples with some Light Blue Cheese and warm apple cider!
  3. Football Fitness.  Football dominates fall!  Of course I had to include it as a fall fitness activity to try. Clearly 99% of you are not about to find the nearest local full-contact football team to join, but you can try out these football-inspired fitness options:
    • Sprint.  Football players are typically quick and in optimal shape.  One way they do this is through sprinting drills. Set up pine cones and sprint in and out of them or just go to your local track and do timed 40’s (40-yard dash). (Optional: carry a football while performing the drills.)
    • Catch.  Grab a partner and a football.  Head to your backyard or local park and throw the football back-and-forth to each other. If you don’t regularly use those muscles, be prepared for a sore upper body the next day!

There are fitness activities for every season. Sometimes all it takes is a hint of creativity!

What do you enjoy doing for your fall fitness activities?
