Fun, Local Lake Activities to Try

Mother helping son fishing. Fish has eaten bait again.

If you had to choose between breathing the air of over populated cities or breathing the fresh air outdoors, which would you prefer?

I spend a ton of time indoors at the gym doing various workouts and giving up my gym membership is not an option. But I jump at every chance I get to be outdoors with fresh air and natural, beautiful surroundings.

I grew up in Minnesota. Yes, the land of 10,000 lakes (though truth be told – there are way more than 10,000)! So, I personally know it doesn’t get much better than activities on the lake. My mother and father-in-law even live on the lake in Minnesota. Going back home to visit is always a special treat! Especially during this time of year, we can mix nature’s fall beauty with activity.

Test the waters (pun intended)! Here are 3 local lake activities to try:

  1. Rowing:. The rowing machine at the gym provides overall cardiovascular benefits, while helping sculpt lean muscle. You can get the same benefits and more by taking the rowing out on the lake. Grab a row boat (you can rent them at many places if you don’t have one), stare straight ahead and row as you would at the gym. Keep great posture, and let your body and arms will adjust to the rhythm of the boat. You could burn up to 500 calories an hour!
  2. Fishing: Bait. Cast. Wait. Reel. Repeat. Not all lake activities have to break a sweat. Some can and should be relaxing, allowing you peaceful time mixed with quality conversations with friends and family. Fishing is a great stress free activity, and these activities are absolutely included in an overall healthy lifestyle. Enjoy this activity with some pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries and Mini Babybel Bonbel.
  3. Paddleboating: Do you think the paddleboat looks as silly as I do? We used to go to a cabin in Northern Minnesota each summer, and the paddleboat was a daily staple for my cousins and I. The paddleboat is another lake accessory you can rent on most lakes, at a very reasonable rate. Grab a partner and get your legs cranking. Your legs will propel you wherever you want to go, and they will get you there just as fast as you can spin them. Making it a workout? Click here to see how many calories you might burn!

Remember, the summer lake activities of waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing might be over, but the lake provides so many options year round. And by year round, of course I even mean once it starts to cool off. As a matter of fact, there are even several activities to do on the lake once winter comes and the water freezes. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves….enjoy the fall, family, conversations and the beautiful lake outdoors!

What do you enjoy doing on the lake during the fall?
