Family Friendly Winter Activities

Winter Sports

When the temperature starts to drop this winter, resist the urge to stay indoors. Winter is the best season for families to enjoy fitness together.

Downhill skiing is a winter tradition for many families. In fact, it’s often a vacation centered around a sport! Kids and adults equally enjoy the activity and I have even observed kids that are better than their parents! If kids fall, they are so low to the ground, it relatively is harmless and they are quick to learn. Just make sure they have a couple lessons on the bunny slopes first. Renting skis and helmets is easy – all you have to do is bring goggles, wear warm clothes, including multiple pairs of socks and thick gloves. There’s nothing like paying for a lift ticket to sit in the lodge with numb fingers and toes!

Check online sites like Groupon and LivingSocial for deals on vacation packages. Also, check out Liftopia.com, which provides discounts on lift tickets.

If you are afraid of heights, cross country skiing is another family friendly option. It’s much easier to pick up and doesn’t require lessons.

If a winter escape to the mountains is not likely, ice skating is another great winter activity. Outdoor rinks and professionally managed ponds can be found in most major cities and renting skates is inexpensive. Frog Pond in Boston or Rockefeller Ice Skating Rink in New York are both iconic in their respective cities and a trip to one is a true winter experience your family will not forget. You can also search online for a public rink near you.

When the kids have a snow day, opt to go sledding with them! Although I do not have any children of my own, being able to take part in these sorts of activities again as an adult is a blast. From marching through the snow to climbing up a hill, sledding is one of the best hidden workouts. Why not join in? Making snowmen, forts and snowballs are also a requirement!

Whatever you decide to do, remember to stay warm and pack a Mini Babybel or Laughing Cow wedge to satisfy your winter cravings!
