Do you dream of white, sandy beaches and hot, sunny days this time of year? Do you secretly wish Frosty the Snowman would just melt already? Is drinking hot cocoa and cozying up by the fireplace giving you the winter blues? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you might just need to escape from winter!
Let’s dream together, and perhaps even start planning our winter escapes to four of the best travel destinations during wintertime:
- Key West: Stay in the U.S. for your escape and head to Key West sometime between March and May when the weather is likely to be in the 70’s or 80’s consistently. Aside from great weather, there are many things to do in Key West: you can visit the Key West Aquarium, hang out in Mallory Square, tour the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum or simply just relax on Smathers Beach.
- St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands: In college, I babysat for the most amazing family. One year, they invited me to go with them to St. Thomas in March, and it was hot! The island is small; only 32 square miles in size. But don’t let that fool you! There is so much to do from scuba diving to day trips to St. John/St. Bart/St. Croix to phenomenal food and gorgeous beaches.
- Austin, TX. This might seem like an unlikely winter destination, but Austin, TX is similar to Key West in that the weather tends to stay between 70-80 from March to May. Not only can you hit water like the Barton Springs Pool, but if you love music and entertainment, Austin is a prime location. Austin is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” and you can find entertainment everywhere, most notably on 6th Street.
- Cancun: Cancun is a great destination, especially if you have plans of doing nothing but lay around all day! You can do that there, and it is perfectly fine. From the pools to the ocean, there will always be a spot to enjoy the weather. If you’re looking for adventure, I strongly recommend taking a day trip to Isla Mujeres and snorkeling then doing the zip line.
There are millions of places to go when the winter blues set in. Just remember to that no matter where you travel, it’s important to still eat healthy. Laughing Cow wedges and crackers pack nicely and will help to stay on track when easily tempted by less-healthier options wherever you decide to go!
Where is the best travel destination to escape winter that you’ve ever been to?
