True or False: It’s still exercise even if you enjoy it.
True!
Yes, exercise can be enjoyable. The definition of exercise states, “bodily or mental exertion, especially for the sake of training or improvement of health.” Make note that it never says anything about long hours on a treadmill or paying steep gym memberships to reap the benefits!
A great way to make exercising more enjoyable is by getting active in the great outdoors.
Here are four outdoor activities to try that won’t feel like exercise at all:
- Explore. Fall is the perfect time of year to explore your city or state. All of these fall activities can be done with friends and family. Or how about trying a new walking trail or park? Perhaps you even live by (or want to travel to) one of the best walking trails or parks in the nation. Take advantage of the beautiful outdoor parks near you!
- Raking Leaves. You might think of this one as a chore; not as enjoyable exercise. Did you know that just 30 minutes of raking leaves burns 153.6 calories (for a 150 pound female)? You can include it in family time, too. Your kids will love gathering a pile of leaves, and then jumping in it. Have them help you and then indulge in some kid-friendly #SnackJoy!
- Backyard Games. Backyard games can be fun and entertaining for the whole family. They can also be a great form of movement while tailgating! Try one of these: horseshoes, cornhole, bean bag toss and/or ladder golf.
- Walking. Now that the air is cooler, it’s easier to be outside to enjoy a simple walk. Walking is often overlooked as a phenomenal form of exercise. Walk from house-to-house with your children on Halloween. Take the dog out for several weekly strolls. Start your day off with an early morning walk, or end your days with an evening walk. A bonus: you’ll be less stressed!
Engaging in a healthy lifestyle means moving the body as often as we can, but that does not always have to be “traditional” exercise. Enjoying exercise will make you more likely to stick with it!
What is your favorite form of exercise – any great ideas for us all to try?

This is my favorite time of year to exercise outside. Yard work, walking, and playing with the kids.
