Most of us naturally eat less in the summer. Our bodies don’t have to work as hard to stay warm and conserve energy during the warmer months as they do in the winter, so we don’t need as many calories to keep us going! That being said, the topic of eating lighter in the summer is still on the mind when it’s time for a beach vacation.
Here are some tips for keeping your meals light and delicious this summer:
Grill your foods – Vegetables become extra tasty when cooked on a grill without the added calories of condiments. Instead of a traditional salad drenched in salad dressing, try tossing various grilled vegetables together with a splash of balsamic vinegar. Meats are great cooked on the grill as well. Grilling allows leaner cuts of meat to take on additional flavor. Try grilled chicken or fish rather than pan-fried or baked.
Snack more – In the summer, my family typically eats lighter, smaller meals which means we need small snacks throughout the day to keep up our energy! Our family favorite is a Mini Babybel cheese round with some fresh fruit. It’s the perfect mix of creamy cheese with a sweet kick!
Focus on the Season – Grocery stores and farmers markets are full of delicious, healthy produce in the summer. Focus on nature’s sweets for treats this summer by enjoying fruit salads and/or grilled fruits. If you do bake something extra special for dessert, focus on fruit pies or crumbles that rely on natural sugars from the fruits rather than heavy desserts that have added sugar. Simple desserts like grilled peaches and berries are delicious with a small serving of frozen yogurt.
Choose your fats wisely – Substitute heart healthy fats like Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Coconut Oil for butter. When baking, I often experiment first with half butter and half coconut oil before using a 100% substitution. More often than not recipes turn out delicious.
Cut out the carbs – When enjoying burgers, wraps, or tacos, try using large lettuce leaves for the bun or tortilla as a lighter substitution. I like Butter Lettuce best!
Skip the mayo – Skip the mayo in your favorite sandwich, burger, or wrap recipes and opt for a wedge of The Laughing Cow Cheese or Smooth Sensations Cream Cheese Spread. I love this Grilled Squash Sandwich (pictured) with Smooth Sensations Cream Cheese Spread Garden Vegetable 1/3 less fat.
Flavor boost – Lighter dinners can be given a flavor boost with fresh herbs, fancy vinegars or other spices. Rely on these items to keep your meals exciting without feeling heavy.Post A Comment
