The question that I am asked all the time by my friends is: “How do you stay healthy with all the food you cook?” Even more so this time of year with all of the delicious holiday treats!
The food I write about is the food we actually eat in our home. Recipes aren’t made just for content. They are made to be enjoyed by the entire family. So, how do you balance healthy eating and holiday treats: Enjoy all your favorites in moderation!
Holiday cookies and candies are completely fine when eaten in moderation, both in terms of the portion size and in relation to the amount of nutritious foods eaten. There are plenty of healthy and tasty foods available to balance holiday baking.
There are many delicious fruits, especially citrus and pomegranate, which are in season this time of year. Fruits are loaded with nutrients but also have plenty of natural sugars that allow you to feel as if you are indulging. Pair your favorite fruits with a Mini Babybel cheese round for the perfect savory and sweet snack!
Cheese is a wonderful savory option to balance out the sugar overload that so often occurs. I love Mini Babybel cheeses because they are simple to grab and enjoy as a snack. Mini Babybel pairs deliciously well with trail mixes. Try a few handfuls of trail mix and a Mini Babybel cheese round the next time you settle in for a movie night this holiday season.
Don’t forget the seasonal vegetables! Roasted sweet potatoes and winter squashes are delicious. Toss them with a little melted coconut oil and a sprinkle of cinnamon and whole cane sugar before roasting for a delicious treat.
